Our eyes are our windows into reality. Thanks to the sun’s natural rays, the world around us is illuminated and we are able to see colors, shapes, and images. This interpretation of light comes directly from our optic nerves. However, human beings (and most other mammals) possess a “third eye” which has many physiological and spiritual benefits.
Deep within our brains is a small section of nerves and fibers that science refers to as the “pineal gland” as its shape is similar to that of a pine cone. Its position is right in between the two halves of the brain, right where the two sides of the thalamus join. It is roughly the size of a grain of rice.
According to scientific study, the pineal gland is little more than a melatonin regulator, but science does recognize that it is significant in preventing cancer and stalling the aging process. While we sleep, the pineal gland washes our body in melatonin, relieving it of harmful free radicals and restoring the massive amount of cells we lose every day. The pineal gland’s release of melatonin protects our body from immune disorders, heart problems, and cancer. Science has linked the reduction of melatonin to Autism and many other diseases as well.
The spiritual meaning behind the pineal gland stands to influence us in a far greater way, and many of those within occult practices already understand its real use. The ancient history of the “third eye” extends thousands of years into the past, and its use as a powerful symbol can still be seen today.
Ancient Use of the Third Eye
The Third Eye, or the inner eye, is an esoteric representation of the pineal gland. Its use as a powerful symbol stretches back to ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians and Hindus. The ancient Egyptians, for example, represented the symbol of the third eye with the eye of Horus. This symbol represented protection, royal power, and extraordinary health. Today, we can see this symbol in pop videos, the Time Warner Cable logo, and even on the back of American currency. Its connection with ancient Egyptian culture symbolizes a secret understanding that most average individuals simply do not possess.
The Pineal Gland or The Sixth Chakra
In addition to the ancient Egyptian cultural representation of the pineal gland, Hindus also focused on the third eye. However, they focused more on its connection to the spiritual and physical energies of the body. They named it the sixth chakra.
The sixth chakra is also known as the brow chakra. Its location is said to be between the eyes, and works by connecting the inner and outer worlds. Intuition, psychic abilities, and wisdom is said to permeate from it. It is the antithesis of all occult power and wisdom, and is generally seen in between the eyes of deity idols within Hindu and Buddhist cultures. When the sixth chakra is opened, powerful dreams and psychic abilities will take over the individual, awakening a power that was previously unknown.
The Symbolism and Spiritual Meaning of the Third Eye
Obviously, ancient cultures had their own interpretation of what the third eye can do for human consciousness. Today, new age philosophies have expanded on ancient wisdom to create a modern understanding of this powerful “seat of the soul.” It is now widely accepted as the gateway between lower and higher consciousness, and symbolizes spiritual enlightenment.
Interestingly, the third eye also corresponds with the geometric patterns of the pyramids which sit at the center of the planet. Today corporations and powerful governmental and scientific institutions use the symbol of the third eye to represent what they do. These symbols are their way of telling us who really holds power over the earth and over all occult understanding.
Depending on your focus, the pineal gland, third eye, or sixth chakra can be used as a pathway towards enlightenment and a higher consciousness or as a destructive occult symbol used to control and dumb down the masses. It is up to us to view it correctly, and to understand the untapped potential and sacred ability of this fragile gland deep within each and every one of us.
